Fifth-year option decline
The Jaguars declined Jones' $25.66 million team option for 2025 on Tuesday, Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While Jacksonville picked up the fifth-year options of starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence and No. 1 running back Travis Etienne, the team unsurprisingly elected not to do so with Jones, whom the Patriots took 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. After acquiring Jones from the Patriots in March in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick, the Jaguars will have the 25-year-old compete withC.J. Beathard for the top backup role behind Lawrence in 2024. During his three-year stint with the Patriots, Jones drew 42 starts, but he was benched in favor of Bailey Zappe in Week 12 after a string of poor performances.
